  Axelle

I sat in that cheap car and watched them leave the church, happy, smiling and newly married.

  So disgusting.

I wanted to rip their happiness apart at the seams.

I had clawed my way back out of Hell after the exorcism, something very few Demons ever accomplish, and I’d been really disappointed to find that my favorite host body had found a way to keep me out by drinking holy water. I’d wanted to come back and destroy the lives that had done that to me.

But I was incredibly weak, and I’d had to find the nearest host. It happened to be this.

I looked down at myself and shuddered.

It was a man for a start.

And an overweight one at that.

I wanted slim, beautiful, blonde Lacey back. How was I supposed to wreak havoc among men if I was one, for hell’s sake? I would have to turn the tide and wreak havoc among women instead.

  Didn’t sound much fun.

I’d tried to jump ship a few days ago, but I was stuck here until I regained enough strength to leave. Who knew how long that would be? All I did know was that marriage had to end. That bitch had no right to take my slave and change him.

  Slade looked, ugh, happy.

He was supposed to be suffering. I hadn’t worked for two years to create the perfect slave to have him decide to be happy. He’d been all I could think about during my short time back in Hell. His body was strong, even though his mind was weak. The perfect combination in my opinion. He’d survived when I’d tried to kill him in a fit of temper for defying me.

  But I wanted him back.

All I had to do was get rid of that dominant personality tramp, Trixie, that Lacey cowered behind. Get Lacey out of hiding and Slade would be mine again.

“Ah, ah, ah,” a terrifyingly smooth voice behind me said.

  My blood ran cold.

I turned to see the Devil on the back seat behind me. I swallowed loudly. I was so busted.

“You know the rules,” he continued. “No Demon bitch gets to leave twice. You got caught. Now, you’ll stay where I put you.” He placed a heavy hand on my shoulder, and I gulped.

I was a goner; for real this time.

I felt myself being ripped from the fat man’s body.

The last thing I remembered was the happy, smiling faces of a couple in love, as I was swallowed whole, consumed by the purest evil.

And then there was one less Demon in the world.

  ~ CHAPTER ONE ~

  Axelle

“Let me out of here!” I scream for what feels like the millionth time. I beat my inky, black ‘fists’ on the fire bars of my supernatural prison cell.

“NOW!” I scream again, but as usual, I’m screaming to myself.

I hate my voice down here. It’s always an unholy shriek, never anything remotely melodic. I wail in frustration and whip around in a circle.

I hate everything about being down here. I have no body, only this black smudge that is my true Demonic essence, no proper voice, no food, no wine, and the worst part is no sex!

I’m a Seductress. A Demon created especially for the purpose of seducing men. Tempting them with sex and then luring them into my web and ultimately their deaths, for their souls to be collected and sent straight to Hell. The fact that I like to maim, torture and torment my victims is just a little something I add to keep my own depraved nature fed.

I’d been back on Earth, doing my job and loving every second of it, for nearly two hundred years, but now I’m trapped for eternity with only my memories to comfort me.

I’m a black smudge that has been wiped away, banished to the inner circle of Hell for my crime. My only crime was getting caught and sent back here in the first place.

Well, that and the whole clawing my way back out again. I suppose that is the real reason why I’m in this, literal, Hellhole.

You see, the Devil lets you out of the gate once. If you get exorcised back home
, then that’s your lot. You stay here to live out your existence at the whim of your creator.

I had never expected that my weak-minded slave-man, Slade Johnson, would’ve had the balls to get rid of me.

  The bastard.

I sigh. It’s such a pity that he betrayed me. I thought I’d taught him better than that.

I miss him, in as much as I can actually miss anything, I miss him. He was the perfect slave, always so attentive and willing to indulge my dark side, and damaged. Oh, how damaged he was. He was ready for the taking. It didn’t take much tempting to get him into my clutches. No, he was ripe for the picking and really, I should’ve killed him months ago, but I’d wanted to keep him just for myself for a little bit longer. It’d been just too much fun to play with him.

But then that little bitch, Trixie, came out and took him away from me. I’d wanted to stick around and make sure that Lacey became the dominant personality of that host body again, so that I could see to it that their happiness was destroyed. Unfortunately, the Devil caught up with me and I was sent back here, banished into this fiery cell to rot away until he decides to set me free.

If he hasn’t forgotten about me already. It’s a strong possibility as I can hear the cries of hundreds of other lost essences trapped in this pit.

Hearing one such howl of torment, I really, really hope that he hasn’t forgotten me. I don’t think that I can cope with being imprisoned for much longer. Time has lost all meaning now, and I have no idea how long I have been locked in here.

  Long enough.

I vaporize my inky black self and try once more, in vain, to get out of this ring of fire keeping me trapped. As expected, I fail, and I shriek again into the dark in frustration.

“Axelle!” the Devil suddenly snaps at me. “Be quiet! That incessant shrieking is grating on my nerves,” he adds in his beautifully terrifying, yet somehow soothing voice.

Sure, he gets to sound pretty, while I only get to wail like a banshee. No offense to banshees, of course.

“Please let me out,” I cry to him, floating over to the bars of the cell, getting as close as I dare, before he zaps me back into the middle of the circle.

He smiles at me; it is a perfect curve of his lips and it has me mesmerized for just a moment.

“I’m not sure I can trust you,” he says, examining his perfectly manicured nails. He has come to me in a disguise so perfect and handsome, I loathe him.

I wish he would show me his true self instead of this sexy, smoldering, suited, dark-haired, blue-eyed creature before my cage.

Rumor has it, only one lucky Demon bitch has ever seen his true self. Or should that be unlucky? She was too weak, and it fried her eyes out of her head before she went insane. I know I’m stronger than that. I’m the only female Demon that's gotten out of this place once I’d been sent back. One of three in the whole history of Hell to accomplish that task. The Devil knows what I have in me. I hope that he has found a use for my many talents and hasn’t just come down here to torment me and then leave me locked away for eternity.

“You can,” I wail again. “You can trust me. I’m yours to command, just let me out of here!”

“Yes, you are mine,” he says lasciviously, raking his eyes over me.

I’m unsure why he finds this black smudge so appealing, but there again, he did create me out of someone’s damned soul two hundred years ago. There must be something here that he finds attractive.

“All mine,” he adds and then vanishes from my sight.

I wail again. Loudly and for a really long time.

  He left me here.

I’d been at the top of my game before I underestimated Slade. It’d been a foolish move, but I hadn’t realized that he’d drawn strength from that silly slut, Trixie. I should have seen it coming and now my punishment is well and truly underway.

I hover in midair, shutting off my shrieks with a grim determination. I will show the Devil that he can’t break me.

  No one can break Axelle.

I am to be feared and respected. Worshipped.

Not dumped in some Hell pit to be forgotten. The Devil came down here for a reason and wailing at him in a weak and pathetic manner will get me nowhere. No, I need to show him my strength, remind him what I’m capable of. I will float here in this very spot, quiet and composed, until he returns for me.

Fuck, I hope he returns for me.

  Luc

I watch Axelle from my place right in front of her cell. I haven’t gone anywhere, just made my form invisible to her. I tilt my head and narrow my eyes at her. What is she doing? She has stopped making that relentless noise and is hovering in the center of the circle; the only movement being made is the shimmer of her form as she flickers up and down.

I’ve been watching her for some time now. She has been locked away for seven months and not once has she stopped moving or screaming. She has more energy in her than I have ever seen from a female essence. It has drawn my attention to her for a very specific task and now I wait to see what her next move will be.

  Nothing.

I stand there, as still as she, watching her for hours. She makes not a peep, nor a movement.

I realized about two hours ago, what she is trying to do. She is showing me that she has accepted her fate, and that she is strong enough to endure it. I admire that about her. I’ve long since had my eye on her, she is my best Seductress, was my best Seductress, sending me soul after tormented soul to turn into new Demon essences to do with as I choose. It’s a shame she got caught. I’d thought at the time that she’d had more smarts than that, but a rule is a rule. Once exorcised, you remain here to make room for the new ones to be given a chance to prove themselves. There are only so many host bodies – humans able to harness a Demon essence – on Earth and seeing as essences cannot survive up there without a host, I cannot set free my entire nation of minions to wreak havoc and bring forth Armageddon.

Much to my disgust and disappointment.

I blink after another hour has passed. Even though I could stand here and watch her for eternity, she has one of the darkest spirits I have ever seen, and it excites me. However, I really have something I need to take care of now. I’ve decided and now it’s time to take action and make my preparations.

  She is the one.

  ~ CHAPTER TWO ~

  Axelle

As I hover, I start to get bored.

  Really, really bored.

I felt like someone had been watching me for the longest time, but now that feeling has gone and instead, I feel like the cage is closing in on me.

I want to move, to scream, to vent my frustrations, but I have made my choice and so I must remain still and silent until the Devil comes back to me.

I block out the cries of the other prisoners and wish that I could sleep to pass the time away. But Demons don’t sleep in this form; there is no need for such a triviality. Instead, the time just ticks away for an undetermined amount.

  “Axelle,” the Devil says softly.

I jump slightly when I hear my name.

“Hello,” I say coolly, determined not to show him any emotion this time around.

“Hello,” he replies and if I didn’t know better, I could’ve sworn I saw him stifle a chuckle.

“Back so soon?” I ask glibly and hope that he doesn’t take that as an invitation to leave.

“Hm,” he says, and, in the blink of an eye, he is inside the cage with me. “Accepted your fate?” he asks.

“Depends. You got something better for me to do than waste away in this cage?”

  “Perhaps.” He snaps his fingers.

The strangest feeling washes over me, almost as if someone has stuffed me into a package.

  I blink.

I blink actual, brand-new eyes, and chance a look down at myself.

I have a body! He has given me a human form, and a gorgeous one at that. I flick my long, blonde hair over my shoulder and run my hands over my perfect breasts, down over my slim waist, all t
he way to my thighs. I’m dressed in a white blouse and black leather pants with six-inch black heels. Oh, yes!

“Your preferred look, yes?” he asks with a raised eyebrow.

“Oh, yes,” I moan in delight in a voice so beautiful, I want to weep. “It’s perfect.”

“So happy to please you,” he drawls and snaps his fingers again.

  The fiery ring disappears.

I take a hesitant step out, tasting sweet freedom.

“I have a job for you,” he says and takes my arm, looping it through his.

“Anything,” I say eagerly. I’m so bored, the idea of being put back to work is a very appealing one. I don’t think for a second that he will send me back to Earth to continue in my chaos-Demon ways, but I keep my long, elegant fingers crossed anyway.

“You will be collecting souls,” he says, as he leads me to an escalator that takes us up to the next level of Hell. It’s like a damned, fiery mall down here.

“A Reaper?” I say in disgust before I can stop myself.

They are the bottom of the food chain regarding employment around here. Well, Reapers and Cleaners… as in actual Cleaners, not the kind that get rid of dead bodies. I’d been hoping for something more in the way of murder and mayhem.

“Oh no, that isn’t the right fit for you,” the Devil says

I breathe out a sigh of relief. Phew, that was close. “Then what?” I ask.

“You will be in the Inbound Administration Office cataloguing the souls as they come through the door,” he says with an evil glint to his sparkling, blue eyes.

  “Admin?” I shriek

He makes a face at my tone.

If Reapers are the bottom of the food chain, then Inbound Administrators are the pond scum that Reapers feed on! I’d forgotten about those. I’d rather be a Cleaner.

“Someone has to do it,” he says with a shrug, “And the last one was just a temp.”
